Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha'apai Eruption Severs Tonga's Only International Subsea Cable
The 15 January 2022 eruption of the Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha'apai submarine volcano broke the Tonga Cable to Fiji, the kingdom's only international fiber link, largely cutting Tonga off from outside communication for about five weeks.
02Deep-Dive Technical Analysis
The eruption and tsunami broke the Tonga–Fiji cable about 37 km off Tongatapu and the domestic extension to Ha'apai and Vava'u about 47 km from Sopu, close to the volcano. A long section was missing, likely buried by seafloor sediment flows, so SubCom's repair ship CS Reliance had to splice in replacement cable; reports cite roughly 50–80 km. Until the international link was restored around 22 February 2022, Tonga depended on limited satellite capacity. Tonga Cable said the domestic cable could take six to nine months to repair.
03Vulnerability & Exploit Flow
Eruption-driven seafloor flows severed and buried the only international submarine fiber.
04Recommended Defense & Mitigation Protocol
Diverse-route secondary cables, pre-provisioned satellite (GEO/LEO) backup and regional cable-repair readiness.
05Security Impact & Geopolitical Consequence
Demonstrated the fragility of single-cable island nations to natural hazards, spurring Pacific investment in route diversity and satellite backup.
