Balticconnector & Baltic Telecom Cables Damaged by Dragged Anchor of the Newnew Polar Bear
On 7–8 October 2023 the Balticconnector gas pipeline between Finland and Estonia, a Finland–Estonia telecom cable and the Sweden–Estonia EE-S1 cable were damaged in the Gulf of Finland and off Hiiumaa; Finland's National Bureau of Investigation recovered a ship's anchor beside the pipeline and linked the damage to the Hong Kong-flagged container ship Newnew Polar Bear.
02Deep-Dive Technical Analysis
Investigators traced a long drag mark on the seabed to the pipeline breach and recovered an anchor missing from the Newnew Polar Bear, whose AIS track crossed the damaged assets at the time of the faults; paint on the anchor matched the pipeline. Arelion confirmed partial damage to the EE-S1 Sweden–Estonia telecom cable, and Sweden reported signs of external force. Coming a year after the September 2022 Nord Stream pipeline explosions, the incident showed that a merchant vessel dragging an anchor can sever several pipelines and fiber cables in shallow Baltic waters with plausible deniability.
