Facebook Disappears from the Internet After Backbone Command Triggers BGP Withdrawal
On 4 October 2021, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger went offline worldwide for about six hours after a maintenance command disconnected Facebook's backbone and its DNS servers withdrew their BGP routes.
02Deep-Dive Technical Analysis
Per Meta's post-mortem, a routine command intended to assess global backbone capacity unintentionally took down all backbone connections, and a bug in the audit tool failed to stop it. Facebook's edge DNS servers are designed to withdraw their BGP anycast announcements when they cannot reach the data centers, so around 15:39 UTC the prefixes hosting the authoritative nameservers vanished. Resolvers worldwide failed to resolve facebook.com, causing retry storms. Remote recovery was blocked because internal tools and access depended on the same network and DNS; engineers needed physical access, and routes returned shortly before 21:00 UTC.
03Vulnerability & Exploit Flow
An erroneous backbone maintenance command, missed by a buggy audit tool, led to automatic BGP withdrawal of all authoritative DNS prefixes.
04Recommended Defense & Mitigation Protocol
Out-of-band management independent of production, stronger change-audit safeguards, and DNS designs that avoid withdrawing every anycast site simultaneously.
05Security Impact & Geopolitical Consequence
One of the largest outages in Internet history, cutting off billions of users and businesses that rely on WhatsApp for messaging and calls, and a case study in shared-fate dependencies and out-of-band management.
