Hengchun Earthquake Severs Nine Asian Subsea Cables in the Luzon Strait

On 26 December 2006 a magnitude ~7 doublet earthquake off Hengchun, southern Taiwan, triggered submarine landslides and turbidity currents that broke nine submarine cables in the Luzon Strait, badly impairing internet and voice links for China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Japan and the Philippines.

Taiwan Matsu Islands Dual Subsea Cable Severance

Two submarine communications cables connecting Taiwan to the Matsu Islands were severed by Chinese fishing and cargo vessels within six days, disconnecting 14,000 residents from broadband internet.
